Meet Our Herd

Cows raised with care and calves nurtured by their mothers.

Meet the herd behind Our Humble Homestead.

Callie

Meet Callie — our original family milk cow and the heart of our herd! She’s A2A2, gives the richest milk with gorgeous cream lines, and mothers every calf she meets like they’re her own. The OG of the farm!

Maggie

Mags is the next generation on our farm a Jersey/Hereford cross who will one day help us raise calves ideal for both beef and dairy. She’s Callie’s daughter and already showing the calm temperament and strong build we love in our herd.

Shirley

Meet Shirley  the matriarch of our Jersey herd. She’s the oldest, the wisest, and definitely the sassiest! Shirley runs the barn with confidence and charm, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Penelope is one of our newest herd mate & truly one of the sweetest cows you’ll ever meet. She has an incredible story: Penelope was once found tied up, destined for slaughter, when a kindhearted woman stepped in and saved her life.

Unlike so many calves with difficult beginnings, Penelope has kept the gentlest heart. She’ll happily lick you until you’re sopping wet. Before she found her way to us, she was so close to becoming just another number. Now, she has a forever place here at the farm.

Tilly

Tilly came to us as a calf  with the biggest, most beautiful eyes and a fighting spirit. She was very sick when she arrived, and it was touch and go for a while. With the help of our friends at Scott Dairy Farms (and a lot of prayers and care), Tilly made a full recovery.

Now thriving on pasture, Tilly will one day raise her own Jersey calves here on the farm. We’re so thankful she’s part of our herd!

Mavis is Shirley’s daughter and our first Jersey/Hereford cross born on the farm. She’s full of her mama’s sass and is known as the resident escape artist — if anyone’s testing a fence (or aiming a kick), it’s Mavis!

One day she’ll be bred to a Hereford to give us the best of both beef and dairy, but for now, she’s busy keeping us all on our toes.

Harriet

Harriet came to us alongside Penelope but unlike her outgoing friend, Harriet was very shy when she first arrived. She wouldn’t even come forward when we entered the pasture.

Fast forward to today, and you might spot her at one of our farm events… usually at the front of the line trying to snag all the snacks! Harriet has truly come out of her shell and it’s been such a joy to watch her blossom.

She was just bred last month, and we’ve got our fingers crossed for a healthy calf soon. We can’t wait to see her step into her new role as a mama.

Handsome Guy

Sampson

Sampson holds a special place in our hearts.

When our son Edward was 15, he was working for a local farmer and carefully saving every penny. One afternoon, I came across an ad for the sweetest little bull calf and casually mentioned it to Joe in the kitchen. Edward overheard and immediately said, “I want to buy him!”

Without hesitation, he gathered up all his savings, even down to a few dollars in loose change and proudly bought Samson all on his own.

Since then, Samson has grown into the most easygoing member of our herd. With his calm, gentle nature, he’s become our farm mascot and a favorite at community events. He’ll spend his remaining years here on the farm, right where he belongs - loved and appreciated by all of us.

Alaina

Alaina, is new here at the farm. We will update once we get to know her a little bit better.

Bucky

When we brought Penelope to the farm, she was pregnant and Bucky made his arrival 10 days past her due date. From day one, Bucky showed his bold personality  very much a bull in every way.

If you’re familiar with Jersey bulls, you know they can be exceptionally dangerous as they mature. For that reason, Bucky will be castrated and raised to eventually provide nourishment for our family. Until that time, he’ll enjoy the best life we can give him, pasture-raised, well cared for, and treated with the respect every animal deserves.

Bourbon Red Turkeys

If you've visited our farm, you've probably spotted our beautiful Bourbon Red turkeys strutting around the pasture. Known for their striking deep-red feathers and calm personalities, Bourbon Reds are a heritage breed we are proud to raise.

We chose this breed not only for their beauty but also for their historical significance and exceptional flavor. Bourbon Reds were first developed in Kentucky in the late 1800s and are prized for their rich, tender meat far superior to what you'll find in a grocery store bird. Because they are a heritage breed, our turkeys grow at a natural pace, developing strong, healthy bodies with excellent flavor and texture.

Our Bourbon Reds are free-ranged, allowing them to forage on pasture, which contributes to their overall well-being and the nutrient density of their meat. They thrive on a diverse diet of grass, insects, and supplemental grains, and they are never given antibiotics or growth hormones.

We believe in stewarding these birds with care and respect, preserving a breed that was once nearly lost to history. When you purchase a Bourbon Red from our farm, you're not only getting a high-quality product you’re supporting sustainable, small-scale agriculture and helping to preserve a piece of American farming heritage.
